Connectivity provider Global Capacity has deployed the Ciena (NYSE:CIEN) 8700 Packetwave Platform in its One Marketplace network backbone. The deployment enables Global Capacity's fiber-optic network, including existing metro infrastructures, to support services at rates as high as 100 Gigabit Ethernet.

Global Capacity expects the new Ethernet capabilities will enable it to keep pace with the growing bandwidth demands of customers for cloud, over-the-top applications, and data services. This last category includes Ethernet private line (EPL), VoIP, SIP, dedicated internet access, software-defined WAN (SD-WAN), and MPLS and VPLS (VPN; see "Global Capacity adds MPLS VPN to service mix").

"We see growing demand for Ethernet bandwidth, driven by cloud and data center connectivity and the higher traffic needs at enterprise locations," confirmed Patrick Hannon, chief revenue officer at Global Capacity. "Installation of our high-speed Ethernet backbone along major U.S. routes allows Global Capacity to remove the geographical barriers that commonly inhibit bandwidth-intensive business applications, providing our customers with the most flexible network service options that enable seamless connectivity between locations."

Global Capacity will use the 8700 Ethernet-over-DWDM packet transport platforms to connect 11 points of presence (PoPs) located in San Jose, Los Angeles, Seattle, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, Ashburn, and New York City.

"This expansion delivers increased capacity and cost-efficiency, as well as improved latency through the latest technology," added Tony Thakur, Global Capacity's CTO. "We are constantly investing in our network in ways that will simplify connectivity to high-demand data centers and enterprise locations, and exceed the bandwidth needs of today's data-driven society."
