Coriant offers 1RU open line system for data center interconnect

Nov. 18, 2016
Coriant has unveiled open line system (OLS) capabilities for its Groove G30 DCI Platform. The 1RU system will support both data center interconnect (DCI) and metro applications, including links that use either coherent transmission or PAM4 direct-detect modulation.

Coriant has unveiled open line system (OLS) capabilities for its Groove G30 DCI Platform. The 1RU system will support both data center interconnect (DCI) and metro applications, including links that use either coherent transmission or PAM4 direct-detect modulation.

The OLS will support a variety of optical layer functions in what Coriant describes as "compact modular pluggable formats." The functions include:

  • up to 96 channels of multiplexing/demultiplexing
  • pre-amplifier
  • booster amplifier
  • local add/drop amplifier
  • optical channel monitoring
  • optical protection
  • optical supervisory channel
  • OTDR
  • tunable dispersion compensation module (DCM).

The system is designed to work well with the Coriant Groove G30, naturally, but also will pair with transmission/transponder equipment with other vendors who use open interfaces. The OLS provides this flexibility via open northbound interfaces (NBI) using YANG model-based NETCONF and RESTCONF, as well as what the company says is an easy-to-use Command Line Interface (CLI), web-based graphical user interface (GUI), and support for SNMP.

"Coriant is delivering on the promise of optical disaggregation and open line systems," said Tim Doiron, principal analyst, intelligent networking, at ACG Research via a Coriant press release. "By focusing on advances in miniaturization and pluggable packaging, Coriant is redefining what it means to be modular and open."

Coriant says it will make the OLS available in the first quarter of 2017.
