ADTRAN offers Mosaic Cloud Platform for SD-Access control and orchestration

Aug. 23, 2016

ADTRAN, Inc., (NASDAQ:ADTN) has strengthened its Mosaic Software Defined Access (SD-Access) architecture offering with the introduction of the Mosaic Cloud Platform. The platform provides control and orchestration capabilities via a combination of modular apps that have been in a microservices software architecture with open source control and orchestration platforms. As a result, the Mosaic architecture can provide open, software-defined networking (SDN) based programmability of broadband access networks while maintaining the features and functionality of traditional management systems.

The ADTRAN Mosaic Cloud Platform uses a multi-layer approach to orchestrate on-demand provisioning of services, applications, and resources from cloud-edge to subscriber-edge. The layers include:

  • an Orchestration Layer for the logical creation and provisioning of services
  • a Management and Control Layer that separates complexity with an open source SDN controller
  • a Device Abstraction/Aggregation Layer that connects underlying physical and virtual network elements.

The platform is designed to enable operators to move quickly to an SD-Access approach within an SDN environment, or lay the groundwork for the embrace of SDN and network functions virtualization (NFV) while looking like a traditional management approach for companies that prefer to ease their way into the SDN waters, ADTRAN sources told attendees of the company's recent ADTRAN Connect analyst and press event. Either way, the platform will support network-level delivery of residential, business, and backhaul services in multi-technology, multi-vendor network environments, the company asserts.

"Open source software drives quick industry consensus for what is needed in control and orchestration platforms, including flexibility across multi-technology and multi-vendor network environments," stated Michael Howard, senior research director and advisor, carrier networks, IHS Markit Technology, via an ADTRAN press release. "Platforms such as the ADTRAN Mosaic Cloud Platform are essential to carriers as they transition to more automation and service agility in order to engage customers via self-service portals. This transition will enable subscribers to easily customize broadband services based on their own unique requirements. SD-Access networks will not only support the self-directed subscriber, but make it easier for the service provider to manage broadband traffic loads across the network while reducing truck rolls and operational expenses."
