Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX) has announced an offering based on G.fast for multiple dwelling unit (MDU) and multi-tenant unit applications. The offering combines the company's AXOS-based G.fast access nodes, Compass cloud software for remote management and service quality analytics, and G.fast and Ethernet-fed GigaCenter premises systems that support carrier-class Wi-Fi.

On the hardware end, the offering includes two G.fast distribution point units (DPUs). The E3-16F is a self-contained, sealed, and environmentally hardened DPU, while the E5-16F is designed as a compact G.fast node for deployment in basements and closets using AC power. Both DPUs support G.fast vectoring and bonding. The systems' AXOS capabilities enable them to operate within a software-defined networking (SDN) environment, which enables service providers to use their existing third-party SDN orchestrator to provision and manage the nodes.

Within the customer unit, the 844F GigaCenter offers high-speed Wi-Fi that Calix asserts is less prone to interference than traditional home routers and gateways. The 801F provides a compact termination point for G.fast and enables service providers and subscribers to locate their service delivery unit – which Calix hopes will be an 844E GigaCenter -- wherever necessary to optimize Wi-Fi reach and performance. Calix GigaCenter software streamlines installation and configuration and enables the networking of multiple GigaCenters.

Finally, on the software side, the Compass cloud software can enable a variety of subscriber self-care features. These include:

  • NetValet, a Calix subscriber smart phone application that can be branded by the service provider. It offers simple to use controls for managing home Wi-Fi settings.
  • Northbound APIs for Consumer Connect Plus enable service providers to integrate NetValet features into their own mobile applications.
  • Self-installation of 844E GigaCenters enables subscribers to set up GigaCenters themselves, while the service provider retains full visibility, management, and control of the experience remotely through Consumer Connect Plus.
