Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX) says that the operators of the Southern Cross Cable Network now have connected to Equinix's International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers in Los Angeles (LA1) and Silicon Valley (SV1 and SV8). The new connections complement the existing connections in Sydney (SY1).

The added data center connectivity comes as Southern Cross announced both a capacity expansion on its submarine network as well as new Carrier Ethernet capability enhancements (see "Southern Cross adds capacity, enhances packet transport").The Southern Cross cable system offers connections among Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, and the West Coast of the United States.

"Southern Cross has been experiencing increased demand for our connectivity services between North America and Australia,” explained Craige Sloots, director, marketing at Southern Cross. “We continue to looks for ways to increase our customer experience, and Equinix provides an ideal environment for customers to interconnect with other businesses between these key content locations."

The Equinix Sydney, Los Angeles, and Silicon Valley data centers now serve as carrier-neutral points of presence (PoP) for Southern Cross as it seeks to improve services for its customers. Equinix says the Sydney data center facilities, located near the Sydney Central Business District, are the only place that provides direct access to both of Australia's two largest peering points: the Southern Cross cable head and the PIPE Pacific Cable network that runs from Australia to Guam.
