Latin American carriers' carrier UFINET has upgraded 13,000 km of its fiber-optic network with new DWDM platforms from Padtec, the Brazilian systems company says. The addition of Optical Transport Network (OTN) transponder-based ROADMs improves the flexibility of the operator's fiber routes, Padtec adds.
UFINET's Latin American network runs from southern Mexico, through Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. The operator has added a new fiber cable network in Colombia as part of the recent upgrade. UFINET also has a footprint in Western Europe. The service provider focuses on providing dark fiber and transport capacity services to the largest operators in the region, as well as the major international operators.
According to Jorge Salomão Pereira, president of Padtec, UFINET will use its DWDM networks to support a range of service offerings, from Ethernet to SDH-based legacy applications. The upgraded infrastructure offers improved protection as well as the potential for future expansion by adding more channels. New links are in the design phase and should be illuminated in the coming months to enlarge UFINET's footprint as well.
