Vitesse offers SDN/NFV-enabled Carrier Ethernet IC

Dec. 18, 2014
Communications semiconductor supplier Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: VTSS) has unveiled an addition to its Serval Carrier Ethernet IC line designed to enable application of software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV). Serval-2 Lite (model number VSC7436) is a Carrier Ethernet switch engine for IP Edge and Ethernet/MPLS access applications, including mobile backhaul and business-class service delivery designed to bring small form factor, low-power network interface devices (NIDs) and lower port count CPE into an SDN environment.

Communications semiconductor supplier Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ: VTSS) has unveiled an addition to its Serval Carrier Ethernet IC line designed to enable application of software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV). Serval-2 Lite (model number VSC7436) is a Carrier Ethernet switch engine for IP Edge and Ethernet/MPLS access applications, including mobile backhaul and business-class service delivery designed to bring small form factor, low-power network interface devices (NIDs) and lower port count CPE into an SDN environment.

Serval-2 Lite leverages the Vitesse Service Aware Architecture (ViSAA) to provide simplified delivery of MEF CE 2.0 services in packet-based mobile and cloud access Ethernet networks, Vitesse says. When combined with Vitesse's CEServices software, Serval-2 Lite supports SDN-ready touchless provisioning and remote control of MEF CE 2.0 services, the company adds.

The device also uses the company's VeriTime IEEE 1588 timing technology to support 4G TD-LTE and LTE-Advanced wireless backhaul as well as Hierarchical QoS (H-QoS) features for support of MEF CE 2.0-compliant delivery of SLA-based Carrier Ethernet services.

Vitesse has customers using OpenDaylight today in conjunction with Vitesse ICs to remotely provision and control services in carrier deployments, asserts Uday Mudoi, vice president of product marketing at Vitesse.

The company says it will make Serval-2 Lite samples available in January 2015.
