Aurora Networks, a Pace company that specializes in optical transport and access network gear for cable MSOs, has introduced the UniPHY Platform at The Cable Show. The UniPHY Platform supports PON, DOCSIS Provisioning of EPON (DPoE), and remote QAM-based digital hybrid fiber/coax capabilities within the same system.

The UniPHY Platform addresses cable operators’ desire to consolidate equipment and footprint at the headend, say Aurora sources, as well as support both residential and business customers who potentially would be served via different technologies and network architectures.

It system also is designed to support a graceful evolution toward fiber-based service provision based on PON technology. This includes not only current generations of PON, but 10G-EPON as well as DPoE, the latter via the company’s CableLabs-qualified AurOS software platform. The UniPHY Platform also leverages Aurora Networks' Universal Services Multiplexer (USM) for support of Remote PHY architectures. The USM offers a software front end that enables aggregation of video and data services to support flexible deployment options as well as incremental network expansion.

"Aurora Networks has a deep understanding of the capacity challenges that operators must overcome to provide the services and quality that cable customers today demand and expect," said Scott Weinstein, vice president, marketing at Aurora Networks via a press statement. "The UniPHY Platform, along with our entire PON and Video Access portfolio, exemplify our dedication to developing the technologies and solutions which operators need to cost-effectively evolve their networks to meet customer demand in today's rapidly changing market."

The UniPHY Platform is currently available. The Aurora Networks sources declined to discuss potential customer trials.
