Regional fiber-optic network services provider DukeNet Communications says it has upgraded its core fiber-optic network to support 100G wavelength services across its Southeast U.S. service area. The new DWDM technology DukeNet has deployed will support 40G and 100G service offerings for its carrier and enterprise customers.

DukeNet’s 100G upgrade comes via the Cisco ONS 15454 optical transport platform. The company’s fiber infrastructure can now support 40/100-Gbps capabilities across DukeNet’s Tier 1 footprint in the Carolinas, as well its Tier 2 and 3 markets throughout the Southeast.

“Upgrading our legacy infrastructure to allow for 100G connections across key routes in our footprint is critical to our ability to continue meeting our customers’ growing demand for high-bandwidth services in an efficient manner,” comments Tony Cockerham, DukeNet Communications COO.

“Our customer base is experiencing heavy demands on the network,” adds Michael Prendergast, senior vice president for Sales and Marketing at DukeNet. “This upgrade proactively positions us to respond in a way that underscores our ‘Next Gen Next Door’ philosophy. Whether it’s an upgrade to an existing 10G or a new 40G or 100G service, the DukeNet network is ready to meet our customer demands right away.”

“The growth of IP traffic driven by video, mobile and cloud applications requires network operators to ensure their infrastructure is ready for the growth in Internet-enabled devices, services and applications,” said Bill Gartner, vice president and general manager, High End Routing and Optical, Cisco. “We continue to enable new ways for our service provider customers to simplify the deployment of 100G services over existing fiber. It’s rewarding to see DukeNet leveraging our solutions to meet its own customer demand for greater bandwidth and services.”
