Australian national carrier Telstra has chosen Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) to provide metro and long-haul optical transport equipment for an upgrade of its metro, regional, and inter-capital long-haul fiber-optic networks. Ericsson will provide its SPO 1400 family for the metro applications and the MHL3000 for the long-haul routes, including 100-Gbps capabilities.

In all Ericsson will provide 100-Gbps coherent transmission capabilities, reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) and DWDM technology via multiservice DWDM and packet-optical transport platforms.

"This technology evolution adds to our existing network foundation and allows for an efficient evolution through significantly increasing capacity, reducing latency, and streamlining our operations," according to Telstra Executive Director for Networks and Access Technology Mike Wright.

Ericsson is a longstanding supplier of optical communications equipment to Telstra, particularly for its long-haul requirements (see “Telstra launches 40G on Next IP network between Melbourne and Sydney”). The new orders make the Swedish systems vendor Telstra’s primary optical equipment vendor for a wide variety of optical applications.

"Ericsson is pleased to continue with Telstra to build one of the largest, fastest, and most robust optical networks in the world,” said Håkan Eriksson, head of Ericsson Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. “With exponential growth in traffic driven by video, broadband, and cloud, this upgrade will allow Telstra's customers to enjoy a superior user experience."
