pocketBERT pB10A offers 10G CDR, BERT, clock synthesis in single handheld package

San Diego-based startup pocketBERT Co. has unveiled its first product. The pB10A is designed to provide 10-Gbps clock and data recovery (CDR), pseudo-random bit sequence (PRBS) generation/checking, and bit-error ratio (BER) calculation in a single 105x144x33-mm unit.
San Diego-based startup pocketBERT Co. has unveiled its first product. The pB10A is designed to provide 10-Gbps clock and data recovery (CDR), pseudo-random bit sequence (PRBS) generation/checking, and bit-error ratio (BER) calculation in a single 105x144x33-mm unit. The pB10A will recover 10-Gbps SONET, Ethernet, and Fibre Channel clock and data streams in the entire data range from 9.95 to 11.3 Gbps. It has its own internal reference clock; however, an external reference clock may be applied if the user desires. In BERT mode, the unit will generate and check such 10-Gbps PRBS patterns as 231–1, 223–1, 27-1, and custom-defined patterns. This mode enables users to evaluate the performance of 10-Gbps components or links (with or without XFP or SFP optical transceivers) as well as perform DWDM tests by generating non-synchronized 10-Gbps traffic. Finally, the clock synthesizer mode enables the pB10A to be used as a frequency source over the range of 10 MHz to 760 MHz. In addition to the features mentioned above, the transmitter offers a polarity inverter and de-emphasis capability. Attributes of the receiver include:
  • single-ended or differential inputs
  • 20 mV input sensitivity
  • Rx lock detect indicator
  • LOS/RSSI
  • polarity inverter
  • ISI compensation.

Users configure and manage the pB10A through a PC. A standalone unit lists for $4150. A full kit, which includes the pB10A, a pre-configured 10.1-inch NetBook, and travel pouch, is available for $4500. Availability is 2-4 weeks ARO.
