Oclaro and 3SPGroup sign 10-pin butterfly pump laser package MSA

Oclaro, Inc. (NASDAQ: OCLR) and French optical products developer 3SPGroup have signed a multisource agreement (MSA) focused on a 10-pin butterfly package for 980-nm pump lasers. The small-form-factor package, 30% the size of conventional 14-pin packages, should find a home in a new generation of optical amplifiers. The two companies expect the MSA to assure amplifier designers that they will have multiple sources for these new pump lasers that will supply devices with the same mechanical outline, footprint, and electrical pin-out. The design features identical pin-out, pin-pitch, and front mounting hole centers as 14-pin devices to maintain backwards compatibility with legacy applications. Electrical connections to laser, internal thermoelectric cooler (TEC), back facet monitor diode (BFM), and thermistor remain addressed to the same pin configuration as well. “Lower-cost and space-efficient optical amplification with potentially higher component density is critical to implementing complex network solutions,” said Simon Loten, director of product Management at Oclaro, Inc. “Customers are looking for ways to reduce form factors and they also want to standardize on one format for all their needs – whether that be cooled and uncooled pump products or multi-chip devices.
