Shaw Communications adds 100G to fiber-optic network

Shaw Communications (TSX: SJR.B, NYSE: SJR) has demonstrated that telcos aren’t the only carriers interested in 100-Gbps transmission. The Canadian cable MSO has announced it has upgraded its fiber-optic network from 10-Gbps to 100-Gbps wavelengths.

The upgrade enables Shaw to better support not only pay-TV, but broadband services to both homes and businesses.

“People are demanding more from their Internet experience, and as a leader in broadband Internet, Shaw continues to upgrade to bring Canadians the best Internet experience,” said Peter Bissonnette, president of Shaw. “The launch of this fiber-optic network allows us to lay the foundation in delivering a new Internet experience for our customers.”

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) supplied the 100-Gbps technology. While Shaw did not reveal which Alcatel-Lucent systems it deployed, the systems provider typically provides its 1830 Photonic Service Switch for such applications. The two parties jointly demonstrated 100-Gbps transmission on Shaw’s network, specifically a 350-km span between Calgary and Edmonton, prior to the current deployment.
