Huawei has joined the 100-Gbps deployment club. The Chinese systems house says that Dutch national carrier KPN has deployed Huawei’s coherent 100-Gbps technology on the KPN International pan-European WDM fiber-optic network.

Huawei says its coherent-enabled systems will allow KPN International to transmit 100-Gbps services alongside existing 10-Gbps and 40-Gbps traffic, which enables 100-Gbps wavelengths to be added to the network without disturbing lower-speed traffic. The system also support 100-Gbps transmission for 613 km without regeneration.

"KPN International is committed to providing users with reliable, fast and innovative services. The leading coherent 100G commercial application enables us to secure large bandwidth and high stability requirements on our network and serve our customers even better," said Jasper Snijder, managing director of KPN International. "Due to Huawei's leading WDM solutions, our international network remains at the cutting-edge providing high performance to accommodate fast-growing service demands."

Ciena (then Nortel) was the first company with a commercial 100-Gbps deployment; Verizon installed its equipment in a link connecting Paris and Frankfurt (see “Nortel unveils commercially available 100G optical system”). Alcatel-Lucent also has deployed equipment capable of transmitting 100-Gbps wavelengths (see "360networks goes 100 Gbps with Alcatel-Lucent" as an example).
