Cisco upgrades ASR 9000 to 96 Tbps, unveils nV network virtualization capability

Cisco (Nasdaq:CSCO) today will discuss a series of upgrades to its ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers. In addition to new integrated services module and enhanced interfaces, Cisco will add network virtualization features based on what it calls nV technology.

[UPDATED] Cisco (Nasdaq:CSCO) today discussed a series of upgrades to its ASR 9000 Series Aggregation Services Routers. In addition to new integrated services module and enhanced interfaces, Cisco will add network virtualization features based on what it calls nV technology.

The upgrades Cisco discussed in a series of online events today include:

  • The new Cisco ASR 9922 Router and high-density 10G and 100G interfaces for the network edge and the Cisco ASR 9000v for the network aggregation layer. The enhancements, along with the Cisco ASR 9010 and Cisco ASR 9006 Routers, will create a single system for high-speed business and residential connectivity, Cisco asserts. The new interfaces include a 2x100-Gigabit Ethernet line card and a 24x1-Gigabit Ethernet line card. The 9000v chassis are available now; the 9922 will be available in the first half of 2012.
  • The Cisco nV technology, designed to blend the network edge, aggregation, and access layers into a single Cisco ASR 9000 system. The result will be simplified operation, increased network capacity, and an acceleration of IPv6 services, Cisco says. nV technology also will enable operational savings of up to 70 percent versus competing platforms, according to the company, based on an assessment by ACG Research.
  • Expansion of total ASR system capability to 96 Tbps through the nV technology's ability to operate multiple ASR 9922, 9010, and 9000v units as a single logical system.

Cisco also announced that Cox Communications, Tata Communications, and FastWeb are now ASR 9000 users. FastWeb will deploy 32 platforms initially.
